Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:  Responsible for the safe operation of a petroleum terminal, in connection with receiving, storing, and loading of ethanol and petroleum products via truck and pipeline

SENIOR TERMINAL OPERATORS RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Directly Assist Terminal Management with the following:

  • The administration of a positive terminal HSE program.
  • The administration of a thorough OSHA training program for all terminal personnel.
  • The implementation, administration and continued documentation of an effective Terminal Maintenance Program for all associated equipment.
  • The continued training and coaching of terminal operations team.
  • Operation projects within the terminal.
  • Safety and operational readiness training within the terminal.
  • API 653 tank inspections to include the tank repairs and modifications and the documentation of the same.
  • Third party contracts including contract negotiations where applicable and any commercial follow up as needed.  
  • Communications and interactions with regulatory agencies to include, local, state and federal.  

TERMINAL OPERATOR RESPONSIBILITEIS/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Ensure the facility continues to portray a positive influence on the community, the environment and the company.
  • Conduct maintenance and accounting tasks in accordance with established company and governmental regulations.
  • Perform daily walk around inspections to identify any potential risks and ensure good housekeeping standards are maintained at all times.
  • Participate in the operation, maintenance, safety and environmental matters of the terminal.
  • Answer and respond to after-hours calls 24/7.
  • Change filters and align all valves (manifolds and tanks) inside the terminal property to assure proper handling, storage and integrity of petroleum products.
  • Generate reports using the terminal’s Diamond load rack system to facilitate operational needs, update carrier, driver and trailer information, and work with the bill of lading creation and modification.
  • Conduct pipeline locates, both scheduled and emergency; conduct inspections on pipeline right-of-way.
  • Pull samples from petroleum tanks and analyze product for clarity, flash/gravity, ethanol concentration.
  • Keep loading rack equipment (mechanical and electrical) clean and in good working order at all time.
  • Keep the driver and terminal areas clean and organized.
  • Safely operate terminal maintenance equipment to include a truck with snow plow, skid steer with associated attachments, fork lift and miscellaneous gas-powered pumps.
  • Interact with drivers and ensure they follow all company and safety regulations. 
  • Train new drivers to ensure familiarity with the Newport Terminal automation system, loading equipment, unloading equipment and emergency features of the terminal.
  • Monitor outside contractors for safety procedure compliance.
  • Ensure all environmental and safety equipment is working properly. 
  • Participate in emergency responses, both training and actual.  Participate in meeting with officials from various organizations (MPCA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies), and maintain strong relationships.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Safe work habits in an industrial environment are required.
  • An open form of communication.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Financial understanding combined with a strong commercial mindset.
  • Ability to manage in a team type of environment.   
  • Ability and willingness to climb petroleum storage tanks up to 50 ft. tall and the ability to lift 100 pounds are required.
  • Adaptable to changing conditions and available 24/7 to respond to emergencies and resolve issues.
  • Ability to work independently and identify and solve problems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with electrical training, knowledge or experience a plus.
  • Excellent customer service.
  • Travel as required.  

Job Requirements

EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Safety training and hazardous materials training required.
  • Spill response training for hazardous materials imperative.
  • Four-plus years of experience in petroleum terminal operations, including API 653 requirements.
